Dining room make-over , part one...Finally.. or should I say move over...?

To all of my blog friends especially those who have followed me over from my old blog... You have been so patient. I know I posted over  a month ago that I was doing a big make over in my dining room and things are finally coming together... I hope this delivers after all of that hype and doesn't disappoint...
I've really been waiting on fabric which still not in, but I am going to show you the half that is almost done (sans fabric) so you can see I'm not lying to you and I have been doing something besides eating bon bon's all day as her kid's whack their heads while they eat dust (see earlier post :)
Here's a before-before picture. I found this the other day. This is the picture on our real estate sheet when we bought the house just over 8 years ago. I had to scan it so I am sorry about the quality..

Here was the "now" before picture.

I had the table centered in the middle of the room for the last 8 years...
The room is 17 ft by 11 1/2 feet. Having the table smack in the center seemed like a waste
of space  to me  and the computer was where every one could see all of my junk...so here's the design recap....
I washed my Polypropylene/Olefin rug.. thank goodness for the versatility of plastic..

We replaced one of those old cheap, faux oak entertainment centers that wasn't nice when it was new...

with the 7 foot long buffet. It's great because less junk gets stacked on top and around it. It holds ALOT of DVDs too.

Buh- BYE

I remember how my husband stood at the window as he watched the old
particle board entertainment center get lifted into the garbage truck one of the last remnants from his college days.We actually let it sit on the curb for a week, no one would pick it up or come and get it....I think I actually heard taps and saw a tear fall when the garbage truck came by and picked it up.  It crumbled into pieces in mid air before it even hit the back end of the truck. That's some good design for you.
My other china cabinet got moved to the other wall and was multi-tasked to also hold some cook books and decorating books. All of the china I never used got packed up and put away.

Then there was the unexpected couch reupholstering...well worth it.

this chair make over... this is the one I used two tones of brown spray paint on. Joys of Home
is having a spray paint challenge. Stop over when you get  a chance...

So.. drum roll for part one.......I did put the curtain fabric up so you can at least envision a roman shade there......

DAH!

Can you believe there is actually that much room there from looking at the before picture? Really it's an 11 1/2 by  9 foot area. That's a decent size. That doesn't even include the table area I am still working on. I don't know if it shows, but it is really cozy...it's great because the kid's can go on-line and I can sit and read and keep an eye on what they are doing. Our grand plan is to eventually put a BIG window where the tiny one is now so we can see right out into the back yard and watch the kids. We are also going to replace the old chandelier as my poor hubby bonks his head on it. It hangs just  a little low. And I think I'd like to do a big area rug, something in a nice darker carmelly color or maybe a rust? What do you think?
I don't know if these will click to get bigger? Does any one know how to do that?
I am working on part 2 soon...:)

  1. Caramel sounds like a great rug colour. It always takes so long to do makeovers. Well it does for me anyway. How wonderful a big window or even French doors will be where the small window is

  3. oh it's looking fantastic, love it when it comes together, it does seem to take such a long time though to get it quite right and of course you have to keep your eye out for things that will work and if you are on a budget like me that is another aspect to add to the equation

the room looks so much bigger and more cozy, great job

  4. Your pictures didn't get bigger when you click on them and I had to go back to our blog and click on ours to see if they did and they do! Lindsey must know how to do that. I will have her send you directions in an email.
You're room now looks 100% better! So pretty and the 'cozy' part does show in the pictures. I am a little worried about your chandalier though, hope it doesn't end up like the entertain center. That was so funny. At least you tried to give it a home. It is so nice to see other families living like ours. Yes, clear flat surfaces are just begging for something to get stacked on them. Thanks for leaving a comment on our blog and I certainly hope you have a wonderful week! Twyla

Too bad about your poor hubby saying goodbye to that old entertainment unit.... trust me, he'll never think about it again... EVER.

  8. Wow! You just turned your dining room room into one great great-room. That's a wonderful place for making a lot of family memories. I'm looking forward to the final reveal!

And aren't you sneaky to put a little spray paint party ad in the middle of a make-over show!

  9. What is it about men and flormica (sp?) covered pressboard!?! I still have that stuff in my house after 16 years of marriage, but, have gotten rid of most of it. I have one large 3 section piece that I am goin gto attempt to paint... I think that fussion paint might just stick to it. It is one of the finer pieces of all the pieces that he had before we married 16 years ago, but I am shocked at what he gave for it. He could have gone to the Oak furniture store and gotten the real thing....

    Good job with the makeovers!

  10. Hi Jen! Wow, it doesn't even look like the same room! What a huge difference. I really like all the changes. That buffet works great as an entertainment center. Awww, poor old flimsy entertainment center. I love that empty white frame you have on the wall too. I want to do that. I can't wait to see what you do with the rest of the room.

About your pictures, if you drag your pictures around within your post, they will loose the ability to enlarge unless you make sure you get all the code that goes along with them. If you move them around, do it from within the html tab rather than the compose tab so you can see the code. As long as you get all the code, then they should enlarge when you click.

  13. what a fun change, Jen! This looks great! You know, until you get a BIG window to replace the teeny one, you could try hanging your valance as high as possible so that the bottom of it only just covers the molding. It sort of tricks the eye into thinking the window's taller than it really is, and that it extends even under the valance (when it really doesn't). Does this makes sense? It's my absolute favorite trick with teeny windows. Can't wait to see the table side of the room!

  14. Great job rearranging and using the things you had. Really enjoying catching up after dealing with our "little" water issue. Reading these great blogs is so relaxing. I can look at other's beautiful homes while mine gets torn apart!

    Blessings to you and yours
