To paint or not to paint.. that IS the question...

I want to lighten up my decor a bit more and do a more  French meets Sweden in a cottage in the urban country feeling or maybe Anthroplochic....
I have this china cabinet I want to paint... it does have some great wood inlay.. but is that any reason not alone not to paint?
Photo from one of my favorite daily reads Reese and Marie
I would love to do this

This photo is from a fab book, Creating the french look by Annie Sloan
 or this to it...
What do you think?

  1. I would definitely paint it. You could always strip the paint off down the road if you get tired of it.

  2. You know what works best w/ your style, but I have to say that if it were me, I wouldn't paint it. I think it is BEAUTIFUL just as it is!

  3. Oh it is a beautiful piece and I know how you feel about wanting to paint it. I have several pieces that I keep thinking would be nice if I painted it - the big armoire in my study is one of them. But then I think- is this just a fad- will I be happy with the paint a few years down the road. I have a few pieces that the finish is not that great anyways so will probably paint- but this piece of yours and my armoire are gorgeous so I would thing long and hard on it!!
Sorry that is probably not much help in helping you make a decision!!!

  4. I have been wrestling with the exact same decision. My china cupboard is perfectly lovely, not all that old and in excellent condition. My new recently remodeled kitchen has cream cabinets with a glaze. Our new dining room suite is cream with a wood top. If purchased new, I would probable get it in cream, but, as Mary Ellen said, is this a fad, will I do a job good enough to warrant the change? It is something to consider.

Also, a few years ago, I purchased a free-standing wardrobe. I antiqued it. When I moved and sold it the used furniture man, said, "Oh my, you should have never painted it. You decreased the value considerably." I keep hearing him say that everytime I want to tweak an old item, especially if it's of any value.

  5. We all struggle with this question, and I am struggling with it now over an oak cupboard we have had for 38 years! We wonder, will I devalue it, is it a fad, etc., etc. However, one thing to remember is that every room needs 1piece of painted furniture in it. I have certain pieces of furniture that I know I will NEVER paint. But also, there are things we tire of. Now, that said, even if you paint it - it would probably take another 10 years for you to get tired of it, and you would have enjoyed it for 10 years...you might even acquire something else you like ever better down the road. Also, if you don't think you would ever part with it, then who really cares what someone else things about devaluing? My daughter is in her 30's and I recently gave back to her a little rocker that was hers - store bought in black with some gold tole painting on it. It is completely back in style now! Sorry to be so wordy, but I'll look forward to seeing what you decide to do! Linda

  7. Hi Jen! I'm all about painting unless it's an heirloom. It's a lovely piece either way. You are so talented, you will certainly make it beautiful if you decide to work your magic!

  9. That's a tough one! It is really pretty now...but if it doesn't match your decor...paint it!

  10. Yes it is a beautiful piece, but I think it would be even prettier painted cream, with glazing or antiquing. All of those carved details would be gorgous painted. I say do it.

  11. I think where most of us would say yes, but unsure if we would do the piece justice or not...you dont have to worry about that bc we know you would def do it justice! I say paint it!

  14. To paint! I know how people feel about beautiful woods, and in a way I share those feelings. I believe there are 2 things you can do:
1-You give it or sell it to someone who will enjoy the natural wood
2-You paint it, keep it, and love it even more!!
Some other people think about value, fad etc...Will you really care if in 20 more years it costs less? It's furniture, not your 401K. One more thing I've been selling painted furniture for over 10 years now, I've heard the fad thing over 1000 times, and white gets stronger and stronger every year...Enough! where is the primer??????

  16. I think I'd paint it. Why not, unless it's a family heirloom or something of great value?

I love the inspiration pix! You're giving me ideas about painting the secretary desk I just got at the consignment store.

Sometimes it's nice to have a mix of finishes, and not all matchy, matchy.

  17. I would have no problem whatsoever throwing the paint brush at it. It just gives it a softer feel and makes everything so warm.

    YEP!! Paint it!!

    Have a happy day

  21. Paint it.... your so talented, I think it would look even better if YOU painted. You know.... why don't you paint around the inlay? Maybe bleach the inlay a little bit to cordinate with your paint choice... just a thought~

  22. Yes, yes, yes... paint it, paint it! I have a post on patchy crackle finishes. It would look great like that first photo with just a touch of crackle on edges, around knobs, etc. Cant wait to see if you do it!

  23. Oh, my. Your inspiration picture.
It is just so wonderful. Just beautiful. Do it! Plus you will do a fabulous job.

I shouldn't say this---but if you don't decide to paint it, there are many lovely rooms with the same French look you are going for where almost everything is white, but there are a couple of wood pieces added in. They are just beautiful too. That didn't help any did it? : )

  27. I'm not one of those people who gasps and says "Oh, no. The wood is so beautiful." Yeah, I say PAINT IT! :) I love your idea photos. It will look fantastic when you get done with it.

  28. I would say paint it. If you don't worry about value (which I don't) - go for it! I prefer to have pieces that I like over monetary value - sentimental is another thing, though.

  29. I couldn't do it. But YOU...you can make the magic happen. :-)
