What's in a name?

When I first set up my painting business, The name Sanctuary Arts seemed so... grand..and sophisticated.
When I started my blog adding At Home seemed natural, but now I wonder if it's just too much or too stuffy. I am thinking about cutting it down to just Sanctuary Arts and that's it. Sometimes I wish I could do a total name change. Something fresh and new.

Then I started thinking about when and if I ever get to open my real brick and mortar store  someday... what would I call it? I would sell my own art and furniture, vintage/European inspired items and architectural pieces. I have to admit. I am stuck for names. I went through the dictionary one late, quiet night and found nothing, but, I did come up with some names for other great businesses (there's nothing like a wandering mind to stay on task.).

Flask...high-end liquor store
Foliage.. flower shop
The Red Fig..food specialty shop
Lullaby Hush...baby stuff store
Sweet Felicity..kid's clothing store
Hat Shop.. um...shoes.. just kidding
Linen....Bedding store
So if I open any of these stores, I am probably covered..but for now, I am stuck. If you had your own store... what would you sell and what would you name it?

  1. I would sell poems for scrapbooking pages and I would call it - Poetives or PicturePoet(maybe) Honestly,I would really love to do that. Someone sends me a collage or set of pictures and I would write a poem for the page. I have done scrapbook pages for my grandchildren and written poems for the pictures. What do you think?

  2. We bought an antique sign that read: Nice & Easy Antiques long time before we even had the store. When we decided to open, that sign was still there, just waiting....it was just natural. Of course it became a joke, since there is 2 of us, people will say: Who is Nice and who is Easy??? Of course, the answer depends on the day, my dear!

  5. I'd call the store "Stupid Me" because I did that once and ran it for eight years before I sold it. Never worked so hard in my life!

  6. Hey You~
Well...I love the name of my Etsy store...Maisy's Market. I think I would sell one of a kind, really pretty girly things also blend in some candy and some fresh pastrys.
I have my name for my Etsy candy store. I just can't reveal it yet. It's not up and running.
I will let you know when it is.
This is such a great topic. I will be the first in line when you open your shop!

  7. I used to paint gifts for the local sorortities and high schools, and I called my business Out Of Hand- my stuff was bright and kinda funky- so I thought it fit.

I think "Sanctuary" brings up such a warm, cozy feeling. Keep it.

  8. I hate my company name... The Magic Brush. I wanted to name it Chateau d' Faux. But figured not everyone can pronounce, understand, spell French.

If it weren't such a pain to change it with Uncle Sam... I would. But all my info, car signs, brochures, web, blog.... all of it is The Magic Brush. Gag.

  9. Ooooh - what a GREAT post! There is a store around here and it's called The Papery. It's all stationary and I've always loved the name! I also love "Patisserie" - not as a name, just love the word! Just saying it, I can almost smell the aroma of baked goods and fresh bread. For the record, I heart "Sanctuary Arts at Home". Kim

  13. LOL I did have a brick and mortar at one time and I called it "Rosie's"! I am so creative, huh?

Actually, I really think for a b&m you should just go with "Sanctuary" I would expect to find all sorts of wonderful, special things in a store named that!

  15. Apparently you and I are having similar thoughts. As we grow and evolve, it is so hard to be stuck to one name. To build a brand though, you have to stay consistent,

I love your name. It doesn't sound stuffy to me. I can see wanting to shorten it just for simplicity sake. Sanctuary Arts is a great name for what you do.

I have been researching names for a future shop. My little sis and I have talked about opening a vintage/high end mix. We both love the idea of mixing old and new, expensive and inexpensive to get a totally fresh and unique look. Since you are so great at name picking, any ideas?

    Have a great day!

  17. Well our antique store we called The Roost because my mil's house used to be called Reeb's Roost, then later our house. I just wanted to shorten it. Now we're opening another space in a different mall - Blue Hills Antique Mall and sharing with two friends so we are calling it Bella Blues. There's a store in Austin that does furniture painting and upholstery called "Spruce". Very cool but I LOVE your Sanctuary Arts. It's great...don't change it! xoxo Nancy I'd love to change my blog name but it's too late!

  19. I would have a flea market with my own little shop at the front of it and call the whole thing CHANCE with a Vintage Market tacked on. I think of how many things I've found "by chance" that I wasn't looking for and totally love. I already found the building I need and everything. But alas, I just signed my contract to teach another year...

  20. Hi Jen, I really do like the name Sanctuary Arts at Home. I am following up from the comment you left for me about Chicago. We just went this past weekend and spent most of the time just hanging out with family but Monday I enjoyed getting out of the loop and wandering around the Old Town area, up Clyborn, going to Trader Joe's for picnic supplies, Jayson Home and Garden and wandering along Armitage. It was fun to see the houses and buildings and have a little more space. Kelly

  21. I love Sanctuary Arts at Home!! I think it's a keeper. :-) To me, is says exactly what you are...calming and beautiful. At home. Ahhh...

While I'm a fan of my Shore House Chic, my mom's maiden name is Fairweather (isn't that fab?!) so I've kind of always liked Fairweather Finds...especially for all the "junque" I find. :-) Looking back, I should have named my blog that. But I was just too hooked on the shore house! :-)
