Art for pennies...

I love those fancy-schmancy bits of art in TJ maxx and Homegoods, but I refuse to pay $30.00 for something that can be made for almost free... I already had a garage sale frame and an old dictionary, so it was just the cost of printer ink and paper.

Print your favorite image on regular old computer paper ( I have an ink jet printer.).
Lightly tape the edges of your image down underneath with double stick tape so that it doesn't curl when it dries.
Then, brew a cup of black tea and use the tea bag to lightly dab across the surface.
Ink jet ink smears and bleeds easily, so don't rub across the image too much.
If you let drops fall onto the image, it spreds the ink and looks really old and water damaged.
After it's dried,
I used double stick tape to ape old dictionary pages that had the words flutter and cocoon on them,
then I mounted the image onto the pages the same way.

And framed it. :)

  1. Love it love it. Today's printers offer us so many possibilities and your framed butterfly is one of them. By repurposing frames, paper items, etc, we also give a new life to iems we would normally toss away. Thanks for sharing. Sea Witch

  9. I know mexcatly what you mean. No offense to the artists who created those pieces, God bless them, but sometimes the concept is so simple that it is just as easy, and cheaper to create the piece yourself.

    You did a beautiful job.

  15. Very cute! I spray my computer images with clear sealer first so they don't smear. I don't know if the tea would work then, but I use stain over them to age them.
