I was inspired by my friend Manuela to plant potatoes.
I imagined organic, fresh, white, creamy, fluffy mashed mounds at Thanksgiving.
Last year, this was my potato harvest...
I mean my lame harvest.
This year, I planted much earlier.
After the plants flower, you can dig for new potatoes ( thanks for the advice Manuela! ). You know, those expensive gourmet kind.
When I stared digging, I wasn't sure what I was going to get.
It was kind of like a treasure hunt. But, I had images of last years results and didn't set my hopes too high...and then....
Hey! Look at that! Holy cow! Is that what I think it is? A real potato! My neighbors probably thought I'd lost it the way I whooped and hollered; it was like I had never seen a potato before.
I squealed every time one came out of the ground.
I ran in the house with a bowlful yelling "Look! Look!I grew these! Real potatoes! From our garden! How awesome is this?!"
My hubby looked at me for a minute,
and then I think he rolled his eyes.
Who can blame the guy?
All that for a root vegetable. Imagine if I had won a million dollars?

Ahhhh! They're so cute! You're not going to eat them are you??
ReplyDeleteIf you have a minute check out my first vegetable harvest of the year...
I feel the exact same way every time I pull something from my garden! I think my carrots were my biggest crowning achievement. I guess there's something about the suspense of pulling something out from the ground that you can't see until it's done.
ReplyDeleteYou sound exactly like me! First time planting potatoes or most anything......I can hardly wait to dig in the dirt! Hopefully mine will be just as pretty as yours!
ReplyDeleteGood for you! I got the same way when I had a garden. I am planning on one next year. Haven't had one since #3.
ReplyDeleteJen, got to share my story: last year I planted a beautiful "shade of green plant"...I picked it just because of the color. By Thanksgiving, as I was gardening, I found this pink "thing" coming out of the dirt...it was a sweet potato!!! After digging for a little while I had over 25 sweet potatoes...me!!!!...the total city girl that can not garden even if her life depends on it!!!! I baked those babies and they were the BEST sweet potatoes ever. My husband told me: it doesn't take much to make you happy, does it???..you know what you are getting for Christmas now!!!
ReplyDeleteIt was just a wonderful surprise...I know you understand!
That's awesome! Did your kids just love it? When Abby was in kinder, they had potatoes in our school garden. I volunteered on digging day, and it WAS like they had struck gold! Now I will have to plant potatoes again -- we do it in early spring, here.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the spuds!
I think it's awesome! Enjoy them!
ReplyDeleteNow you have me wanting to grow my own potatoes! I would be so excited too!! Congrats and keep on planting!!,

That is so funny! My kids LOVE digging for potatoes at my parent's farm.
ReplyDeleteThat is so funny. My hubby had the same reaction when I brought a carrot into the house that I swear measured a whopping 3 inches long. But boy was I proud.
ReplyDeleteYou are too cute! I love that you're so excited! You know me, I think everyone should grow some of their own food so I'm sooo delighted that you got such great looking potatoes!
