La la Lovely....

Do you like it?! Do you like it?! The very talented Sara is giving me an awesome bloggy make over. And it's been painless too... I love make-overs where no one waxes my eyebrows! It's still the same great blog but I shortened my name a bit to just Sanctuary Art. I kind of felt like a kid whose mother named him Phineas Melvin Whipplebottom after some obscure uncle and then wouldn't let anyone call him Finn... Change is good..and sometimes as we grow; change is needed.

So thanks for hanging around and reading and stop over to Sara's blog because she does amazing work and has a la la lovely, lovely shop!

Party anyone?

This person gave me a great party idea.... Let's dig deep into our old pictures and decorating archives and show a before and after pictures. Maybe it's a picture of your house when you first moved in 15 years ago and how it looks now, or the bedroom that was bright blue and sponge painted with scary teddy bears that you totally re-did...
In fact the bigger the before decorating disaster, the better!
Feel free to use the button on the top and the biggest decorating disaster gets a prize.
Let's link up Tuesday the 8th with our pics and par-ty!
I can't wait to see what you have!

Turn a picture frame into a decorative tray...

I made a collaged decorative tray from an old picture frame... I think it turned out great and it's easier than it looks.. I can't take credit for this project. I saw something very similar in a decorating magazine somewhere, but they never explained how to do it, so here's the nitty-gritty.

You'll need a few tools, handles, collage elements, paint, plywood, wood glue, and an old wood frame with the original glass or (safety) plexiglass (Unless you are going to put plexiglass in, I wouldn't put any weight on it because picture frame glass in really thin and could crack easily.).
(especially if you have kids around, my kids break everything.).
Start by removing everything from the frame. Be super careful with the glass and any staples or nails. Always take proper safety precautions and wear appropriate safety gear. Put the glass somewhere safe. I put mine next to me and almost broke it about 40 times.
While you have to first drill holes for the handles, this is NOT the proper or safest way to drill them. This would be the Jen way that makes my poor hubby cringe. Don't worry honey, you can barely see where I accidently went through the newspaper to the floor.

Paint your frame now and let it dry.
Now is a great time to work on your collage (I think this would be really cute with family pictures too.).

I flipped over the cardboard back of the picture and used double stick tape to adhere my ephemera and images. I used old book and dictionary pages, post cards and images printed off the computer.

When your frame is dry, polyurethane it for durability and then you can add you handles on. Make sure you screw them in tight. Carefully replace your glass, and then your collaged picture.

(Sorry about the blurry pic!)

When you have everything in, add cardboard until the picture area depth is the same height as the back of the frame. This way when it's flipped over, the glass won't slip backwards.
I went to Home Depot and the very nice gentleman there cut an 1/8 piece plywood to fit the back. Have it cut an 1/8 inch less than you need all the way around to make sure you don't overlap the outside edges.
You'll put glue around the edges where the back of the frame meets the board, then you'll hand screw it in the back. Pick screws that are just long enough to go through both the back of the plywood and the meatiest part if the frame. I put in about 3-4 per side, being careful not to hit the glass at all or go through the front.

Once it's in, you can paint the back. I put felt on the back of mine and it was ready to go. You could also add a hanger on the back and use it on the wall for custom art.

It's just crate....!

While I kind of liked this storage piece from Pottery Barn

What I really loved were the little, vintage looking aqua crates underneath...

Did you know they don't have those for sale in their catalog at all?.. how dare they!?

So of course, I had to make a few for myself..
It was as easy as painting a crate from Michael's, and stenciling a number on the front!
I made my number stencil by blowing up a font in Word and cutting it out with a craft knife.

Barn house girl...

I am a sucker for anything old and decrepit. The rustier, the more falling apart or dusty... add a bit of history or mystery and the more romantic it is to me for some reason.

On our West Virginia trip, I spied a bit of grey through the trees and had to investigate...

When I got closer, I was excited to see it was an old barn... After knocking on the front door of the house next to it; the really sweet elderly couple who owned the farm were more than happy to let me take pictures with a bit of history and a lovely chat.
The barn was built sometime in the 1930's (karma) and they used it to keep thier farm tools and equipment.
They raised hay and cattle.
They had tried pear trees to start an orchard, but the Cicadas hit a year later and wiped them out.

When they became too old to work the farm,

they sold the 20 acres of the land off and kept 5 pristine acres to them selves.

including the barn and tools.

And hadn't been inside in quite a few years.

Next to it was the chicken shed.

Despite the asphalt shingles, I thought it would make the dreamiest little retreat..
Maybe an artist's studio?

P.S. ( this ps is just for you Tara... ;) Thank you to every one who participated in the open house!)

Quick Virginia recap..

This is the beginning of the trip.. see how fresh and happy I look?
I did NOT look like this two and a half hours later.

There were some really cool sites a long the way that just begged for a picture.

We went into Pittsburgh, Pa one day,

and coming from Illinois, the flattest part of the country, it amazed me how everything functioned with all of the ups and downs.

We hit the AWESOME children's museum while we were there and they have a great Mr. Roger's exhibit.
On the trip back, we made an unplanned stop in Ohio at the North Market. This is the kind of place that Food Network dreams are made of.
It's a square market in a historic building that has everything from Thai food to Greek food.

We made sure we had ice cream from here.It was some of the most amazing ice cream I've ever had. Make sure you read some of the flavors.
I had the Celery. It was pretty good. My little one had lemon and blueberry, it was like some one took a cheesecake and put it on a cone.. IT. WAS. THAT. GOOD. The backyard mint was a bit of awesome minty goodness too....

There were also amazing chocolates.

Pastries,

And tons of other culinary experiences. If you are two hours from Columbus or less, I'd definitely recommend a day trip there.

Traveling like this reminded me there is so much to see besides my own backyard, only hours away.

Speaking of backyards, were we stayed was twenty minutes from any kind of civilization what so ever.. If you're a barn lover, I 'll show you this amazing barn my next post. Here's a peek..

Carry me back to old Virginny...

More likely carry me back from old Virginny...
We got in at 9 p.m. last night.
There's nothing like trekking across the U.S. from Illinois to West Virginia and back with 3 kids under the age of 7; Picture me for 12 hours mostly riding backwards passing out snacks, drinks and the occasional threat.
I'd love to say I've seen a lot of historical sites, but what I really saw was the inside of a lot of McDonald's bathrooms.

We stayed with friends in a remote area and we saw beautiful mountains, clean air and deer everywhere.
And the kids really were quite good despite all of my complaining.
It was a great family bonding time, and a wonderful memory maker.
We headed up to Pittsburgh, PA one day and went to the amazing children's museum there. On the way home we stopped in Columbus at the fantastic North Market.
I have some pictures to follow and more things to share.
I really missed you.

Hanging around....

this is a repost from my old blog. I am on a bit of a vaca...

Where's a stud when you need one? When I want to hang a larger mirror or picture, I always seem to be by myself..

P1011502.JPG.jpg

This mirror was an awesome deal at the Hob Lob.

Now, I am no professional at all, but I wanted to share the method that I use with you for marking out to hang larger objects, especially when they have those two inset hanging holes (Which I hate) instead of one wire or a saw tooth bar (which I love...) and have to do it by yourself with out some one else to spot for you. This avoids all of the extra measuring and guess work and re- drilling in case your measurements are just a little off...I hope I explain this clearly! And if you have any doubt, please err on the side of safety... I would hate to hear that one of my blog reader's perished while decorating.

First, use a stud finder to see if there are any studs underneath and to make sure there's no electrical or plumbing running under where you are going to drill. That would be very bad. My brother once drilled through a plumbing line, thank goodness it wasn't electrical! Not a good thing. If you have a stud, that's great, use it! But my studs never seem to run under where I want to hang the heavy stuff or are
around when I need them.

So, I used wall anchors ( we also call them Molly bolts, I'm not sure why..) and very long screws because it was so heavy. These are the hangers I had to work with that were already on the mirror.

First, mark on the wall at top of the mirror or picture in the center where you want it to hang. If there isn't some one to help you, you can cut the silhouette of the object out of a piece of newspaper and position that on the wall too (then just use that piece as your "map"..you'll see...)

Then, You're going to make a "hanging map". Take a piece of paper with a straight edge. Any piece as long as it will run the entire length of the the back of the picture or mirror.. The biggest one I had was from a shirt box, which is why it's a bit crumply, but it's going to be thrown out any way... Er... I mean recycled...anyway. Tape it to the top and the sides so that it's well fitted and the straight line runs along the top of the mirror. Mark the center spot on the paper, and use a tape measure if needed.

Once the paper is well fitted, Push a marker or pen into the very top of the hanger holes.

Once you have both holes marked, take the paper off of the back of the mirror and re-tape it to the wall, lining up the two top center marks and the line and(very important) use a level to make sure the two holes are level with each other. Remember the top of your paper is the top of the mirror so don't place it any higher or lower.

Once you are sure the marks are level, and your paper is taped and isn't going to move; Don full safety protection and drill right through the paper into the wall. Make sure the drill bit is big enough for the wall anchor to just go in. You wall anchor should have to be slightly hammered in; not just slip in. If you drill too big of a hole you'll need a bigger anchor and too small of a hole, a bigger drill bit and you'll break the anchor when you try to hammer it in. It's better to always start with a smaller bit and gradually go larger.
Rip your paper down and hammer your wall anchors in.

Do the same on the other side, learning from your mistakes from the first wall anchor ;)

Once your wall anchors are in, you can screw your screws in. Look at the wall hangers on the back of the picture for guidance on how much screw to leave sticking out. Normally, it's really not a lot.

Then you are ready to hang!
