Lately I am hooked on an idea (Which, as usual, I can guarantee that poor Mr. R has no idea about. Until now.), that when I paint my cabinets, I would have to have new counter tops because cream cabinets with a cream countertop just doesn't go.

So even though I would love granite, I am also completely enamored with the idea of wood countertops.

It's not like it's a new idea. After all, it's what they had before man figured out how to grow laminate trees.

Butcher block is old ,old, old and trustworthy.

But I am interested in planked lumber in a lovely dark Carmel-ly tone.
All worn with age and use.
Gorgeous.

Warm and natural...

You can get them pretty inexpensively from Ikea!
ReplyDeleteI think it's a great pick and he should LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteI bought the Ikea counters and I LOVE them! I think it is a fabulous idea - tell Mr. R that I said so! Oh, and my lovely architectural salvage trip was to Dubuque, IA. About 2 hrs west of Rockford. One of my favorite places on earth! ;o) ~mary~
ReplyDeleteI don't know about Mr. R.....but I think you should go for it!! I love wood counters.

ReplyDeleteWe've had butcher block for over a year and really love it. It warms up the whole kitchen, you can cut anywhere and no worries putting hot pans on them. They only look better with time. Ours came without a poly finish so we give them a warm mineral oil treatment about every 6 weeks and they only get better with time.
ReplyDeleteHope this helps.

I've always loved butcher block. I think that wood counters are gorgeous. I mean, I like the granite but I'd rather have wood.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Mr. R., what do you think? No peer pressure from everyone who reads this blog or anything! :) Wood counters would only be absolutely stunning!
ReplyDeleteLove my butcher block island! Like all the others have said, I cut right on it and love each ding more than the last. :)
ReplyDeleteYou're on the same page as my parents- they're in the middle of a complete kitchen re-do and they've chosen wooden countertops. You can't go wrong-- it's so classic!
ReplyDeleteLove all the photos! esp the ones with the chippy white paint! great inspiration! ~lulu
ReplyDeleteThis WOOD be amazing, go for Mr. R!
ReplyDeleteI think wood countertops would be beautiful! I have granite, and while I love it's functionality and durability, I hate the look. Just too cold for me. I also think poured concrete countertops are amazingly utilitarian beautiful...one of my friends just got them, and I am in love with them. Have fun with your kitchen re-do!

I'm loving the wood too right now and have heard a lot about the ones that Ikea carries. Many people have written about those.
ReplyDeleteMy mom has wood counter tops and they are beautiful, but they do show wear. If you are the type of person who would be bothered by that I say go granite, which is what I have and they look the same today as they did when we got them. Either way you will have something beautiful. Good luck.

i love wood countertops, too... i couldn't do them in our new kitchen because of the shape of our kitchen- our contractor thought there would be too many seams & cuts. whatever- i won't listen to him next time! i have cream-ish counters & cream cabinets, but i'm pretty happy with them! but definitely do wood if you can... i would have done Ikea if i could have!
ReplyDeletehave a great weekend!

I have a wood counter top and a wood topped island, walnut. I'll bet you would like it with the color you have picked out. Wood and cream/white always look pretty:)

J!
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is, Yes! My next house will have wood counters in the kitchen--been plotting and scheming for quite awhile--may even do a wood sink (yes you read that right) in the butlers pantry.
We visited a castle in Scotland where they had a wood sink--100 years old and in perfect condition. Brazilian wood that doesn't leak. No clinking or chipping the china in that!
I'm glad you posted about this...I am contemplating painting my cabinets cream/white, too (I think I mentioned that in a previous comment) and although I was thinking about black countertops, butcher block was lurking in the back of my mind, too. It's so warm-looking! I need to look into it further...
ReplyDeleteI say trust your instincts and go for it.
ReplyDeleteoooooooh, sooo fun!!! can't wait to see what the results are! ;)

ReplyDeleteOh, very cool! Does Mr. R read your blog??? LOL! Thanks for visiting my blog today and saying hello. I've been taking an unexpected blog LOA...I've got to get back in action soon. I miss my bloggy friends! :)
ReplyDeleteI love this idea Jen, I love the contract between the dark wood and cream cabinets, plus it is more cost effective!! You better show before and after photos!
ReplyDeleteI'm contemplating this myself. My cabinets are in dire need of a work over because they are made of pine and very nicked up. I love the idea of the wood countertops with the painted cabinets. You've got my vote!
