The shimmy shimmy Earth shake...

Ummm.. Dear Mother Nature,

I live in Chicago... the land of tornados,
and blizzards
and high winds.
Not Earthquakes...

Except for last night when we had a 3.8 earthquake just outside of Sycamore, IL.
It woke us up about 4 a.m.
How rude.
That's our second one in 5 years
in the middle of the night.
Everything shook for about 10 seconds.
It woke me up, not scary, just so rude.
It's like when your neighbors have a loud party on a week night.
You know I need my beauty sleep.
It must have really shimmied even closer to the site, if it shook us here.
My husband got up and checked the house. We thought a snow plow hit our house, or something exploded near by.
This is not San Francisco. A good friend of mine lived there for over 10 years and had never felt one earthquake.
She moves to IL and has 2.
Maybe she brought them with her.
See N.. it's your fault.
Mother Nature, what's going on?
At least next time make it in the middle of the day.
I'm lookin' pretty ugly this morning.

Thank you,
Jen

  1. I saw that on my google news homepage and immediately thought "that's where Jen is!" Glad everything is ok. We've had some tremors here in IN a couple times, kinda freaks me out.

    Looking forward to sat!

  5. so glad nothing was broken (especially those mirrors behind the sofa!)

we had a little shimmy shake here in central ohio back in the late 70's or early 80's. i had just taken my contacts out & that intensified the effect, for some reason?

earthquakes are such a strange occurance.

  8. I have bad news for ya sweetie. Illinois is on a major fault line. It's surprising to me that we haven't had more earthquakes. Thankfully I slept through this one, but hubby was at work and thought someone hit the building with a snowplow. LOL

  9. totally crazy! welcome to our world down here near the San Andreas Fault!! ;)

I'm sorry, you're right - blizzards, winds and tornados are for your part of the land. We'll keep the wildfires and earthquakes down here for us.

  11. Glad you are ok! I made it through a few earthquakes growing up in Northern California. Now living near Yellowstone Park makes us very susceptible to them, but I never feel little ones.

  15. Hello... Lorraine sent me a link this morning to your blog. I also love to paint and used to paint a lot of furniture. Actually, I spent yesterday scouting thrift stores...fun. (I live in Elmhurst) We might have met over the past years as Jack is my b-i-l. Your blog is fun. I have a couple but not w/google.

    And....

Not to be a downer, but google the New Madrid Fault. OY

  16. You need to lose the 'N' friend - maybe they'll go away then! ;-) Teehee - thankfully we always seem to be ok over here in the UK! Did feel something a couple of years back - I live in an attic - so I just thought that a really very heavy vehicle passed by! Sometimes it happens - and you feel the motions! But then it just seemed to be a little more than that....lasted about 20 seconds. I ran and kept holdof the TV. It's balanced procuriously on top of something else. I never watch it - but I still didn't want it broke! Great blogging x

  18. I did hear about that...pretty weird. But you guys have to remember that there are faults out your way too. I believe the largest EQ ever recorded in the US was the New Madrid Fault. Quake Hold & Museum Putty...we can't live without them!! ;}
