Back to the basics.. some down-home bloganista's...

Do you find as things change in this world, you want to start getting into baking your own bread and raising your own garden? Make it more wholesome for your family?

I try not to talk about it a lot, but I am big into organic, sustainable, environmental, etc.
I don't want to be pushy or preachy about it because it's an individual lifestyle choice.
I think it's in my genes a bit. My Hungarian grandmother was raised on a tenant farm in Fox Lake, and my Great-grandparents on the other side were Polish farmer's from Wisconsin all the way back to the 1880's before they became all city-fied and that.

I try to do my part ( except for that disposable diaper thing. Boy, did I fill the landfill on those.), but wanted to recognize a few of the ladies in blogland who are also doing a back to the basics with home baked bread, chickens and more, and introduce you to them incase you are interested.

Let me introduce you to.....

Manuela. She was one of the first blogs I read that lead a very similar lifestyle to mine. She is the preservation, no debt, reap the bounty queen~ ! The wonderful woman also generously coached me through my first season of potatoes!

Heather, who now is a certified chicken owner and bread baker. It's my dream coop! It's bigger that my house!

Anne Marie, super-sexy and sustabiable, runs a CSA and more.. what else could you ask for? This is her potager garden!

How about Jayme??? She bakes bread, reads my fave magazine, Mother Earth News and has her own flock plus more... Though the crazy lady did just get a rooster. :)

And one of my favorites, Homestead Revival. Everything you want to know about doing all of those home-steady things like keeping bees and keeping your harvest.

So what do you think about the new wave? Do you want me to post more about it? Are you working towards sustainable and down home living? Back to the basics? Put your link in the comments, we'd love to stop by for a visit.

~Jen

  1. Love these girls.
~ I am all about organic..recycling and buying local as much as possible.
I would love more posts like this.
I live in the heart of our little city so chickens are out for me but I love living vicariously through others bloggy lifestyles.

  2. I am with you on that one. When we got the farmhouse, that was the first thing that I wanted to do. Go back to basics. My grandfather lived in TN. When I was younger and we would go to visit we helped with the "garden". The 3 acre garden! That was not including the corn field and a few other fields. I loved it. I still love it. I find myself wanting to incorporate a down home lifestyle into our lives more and more.

  3. My husband and I are working on it. We use vinegar instead of harsh cleaning products (well we do still use some in the bathroom). We have reusable grocery bags. Also, we will be first time gardeners this summer and I am so excited! We will have our very own 20x25 ft plot in the community garden this year. Could be an interesting summer as neither of us have a clue what we're doing! :o)

  4. I love reading about this but you are right...sometimes girls can get a little preachy about it..(sometimes literally as in religion)....as long as we realize we all can do things in different ways it can be so much fun. A great way to live but everyone has to discover it their own way and at their own speed. Great post and very nice blog...enjoyed it

  6. Why not? It doesn't have to be your everyday blog but what about one day a week you share something about it? I try to do my best and each day I see that I do something to save our planet, be more healthful to my family, it just depends.
    I like all those things.

  7. So jealous of those who can keep chickens and bees! For my part, veggie gardening is where it's at. I related to the thrill of your potato harvest. Last year I was a virgin at growing edible pod peas-whoa, yummy! This year it will be garlic, beats, and purple carrots. blessings, kittenz

  11. i agree that it can seem preachy when we write about good things that we are doing personally... but you did a great job! i'm in the process of re-entering the 'down-home' world. i started a garden & was enjoying learning how to do more organic, earth friendly things on my own about 18 months ago, and then my husband got sick (testicular cancer) and we put our house on the market (150 DIFFERENT showings in 9 months). let's just say i didn't fall off the earth-friendly wagon, i DOVE off that cart in a hurry! we were under so much pressure & sickness during those months that i couldn't do more than just clean the house, cook something easy, care for my husband & play with my kids.
now we have moved & my husband is cancer free... and i'm plotting our small vegetable garden with hopes to expand it each year as we get to know the landscape here!
i regret the months of waste, but i know i couldn't handle the extra steps during that time. i believe it's worth it- i care about our earth & my local farmers. sometimes you gotta do what you can do...
sorry this is so long! thanks for the great links!

  16. Loved this post Jen. Thanks for the links. I'm also into organic/sustainable/environmental. When I was raising my family 25 years ago and using cloth diapers (that I made),pulling up veg from our garden patch & walking to get my groceries we were considered "hippies". I love that it is now "the new wave" :-)

  17. I'd love to hear more about it! We definitely try to use green gardening practices (big on using little water/water barrels) & lifestyle choices. I can't say I'd ever have chickens :), but I'd love to try canning this year for the first time & try to save & savor our first veggie garden's goodness all year long! This is your blog, please post whatever you'd like! :)
    Blessings,
    Stacey

  19. I am new to your blog and the others you listed as well. I would love to see more posts on this as well. I am stepping back into this type of life style after being away from it for over 20 years! I am not able to do chickens yet, but still want to can, grow, bake and make a majority of our foods instead of purchasing them.
I currently belong to an organic co-op and am thrilled with the selection and the cost savings.

  20. Don't hate but I don't do anything. I helped fill the landfill back in the day too. I would read whatever you wrote about so it wouldn't matter to me if you talked about it or not. Have a good evening.

  21. You know I'm so all about this so I would LOVE more posts on this subject.

I think that chicken coop is cuter than my house! I have coop envy now!

  22. I would definitely enjoy more posts with your ideas on these topics. I am trying to slowly switch out to more organic, chemical free, and homemade. But, I also know my time is limited, so I need easy alternatives and not ones that take days and a ton more time! I definitely don't think chickens are a good option for us when we leave for 1-2 months every summer. ;) What are your favorite tips & tricks for natural, sustainable living?

  23. Oh, I try to do those things but I'm not good at it. I am the daughter of a bread-baking queen, and ever since I got married, I have not been able to bake a decent loaf to save my life. I am teaching myself how to garden (I've done tomatoes for a couple of years, and I'll be branching out to other veggies this year), and just started sort-of composting last summer (thanks to Manuela). I am a bit of a recycling tyrant, though I don't mind if a little paper gets in the garbage, because the city composts it. Plastics, though, get recycled or else!

And apparently I type too much.
