Bloganista's.. the real trendsetters....?

I used to anxiously await my Pottery Barn or Ballard's catalog. Elle Decor was a mainstay as were many, many other decorating magazine's.
While I still love and buy from those places, after blogging for close the 3 years now, I've noticed that pretty much everything that comes out in catalog's and magazine's has already been done already by blogger's about a year and a half before it's put into print.

Here are some early trendetters I started reading for inspiration ( and they are still trendsetting! ):

Sara was introducing us to a love of typography and grain sacks back in 2007.

Lidy was cool French before French was so hot .

Dawn and Karla was using vintage paper and elements before Pottery Barn even knew what "Vintage style" was.

Rhoda and Manuela have been all over ironstone before anyone else. Watch, it's coming.

Courtney one of my oldest blogging buds did the whole "blue and white thing" that is so hot this year over 2 years ago.

Kim at Twice Remembered did the whole farmhouse style reno back in 2008, beadboard, wood countertops and all. Man I love her.

And everyone knows Heather for her love and introduction of Modern vintage.

I know I've missed many more.

My thoughts on what's next?
( Keep in mind as I say this, some days I don't know my bottom from a hole in the ground.).

I think sustainability and a return to the basics is coming next. Local and organic is finally going mainstream and people are turning to handmade more than ever.
Gardening and growing your own, baking bread, keeping chickens, and a canning revolution.

and in home style ( some of it's already out there):
wood countertops
menswear influences
graphic print curtains inspired by nature
farm prints
modern farmhouse instead of vintage
botanical graphic print pillows inspired by vintage
and as crazy as it sounds: railroad inspired influences..think 1930's
signs, wheels, doors, gears, boxcar inspiration with maybe a hobo or two thrown in (Just wanted to see if you were still reading..!). Sound too out there??? Wish you hadn't tossed your 3rd graders Thomas stuff? ;)

So what do you think? Who do you think some of the next or continuing trendsetters are? Am I totally crazy? What do you think some of the next trends are?

And there are new "Bloganista's" on the rise all of the time..

Stay tuned!

Jen

  1. I am letting everyone know that I have moved my blog to my new site www.itssoverycheri.com
I need to ask you, to please go over and RE-SIGN up to follow me over there. Google won't let you take your Followers with you so you are no longer getting my info in your reader, unless you have gone over and signed up. Sorry if you have already done so, I am trying to go back and forth between both blogs as well as my new e-mail and my old e-mail.
I have lots of fun things going on over at the new blog, so I hope you will hop on over and check it all out.

I also have a new give-a-way going on.

  2. haha! Your post cracked me up...

I have no idea what's next, but I'm pretty sure it won't involve hobos. Though, if it did, I could totally be on top of that trend. I live in a college town with quite a few interesting people ...

  3. It is the bloggers, junkers, and artists who are the trendsetters. Sue Whitney is one of them. She has done countless projects in her books and on her JunkMarketStyle.com site. Within months, a certain catalog comes out with identical or similar pieces. Since it has happened so regularly, it is unlikely to be a coincidence. It seems that catalogs/companies take the ideas, mass produce them, and take credit for it all...without any acknowledgement or compensation to the originator. Highly unethical!

  4. Lol! Even though it sounds out there, I totally agree with your picks, especially eco friendly, sustainable, organic items. Hey, if keys are big as art, why not railroad themed stuff?

I'd like to add rusty stuff to your list. So many bloggers out there (Funky Junk Donna comes to mind) have made great use of rusty items. We're already seeing aged copper, I have a feeling we're gonna be seeing rust in our PB catalogs!

  5. What a great post Jen! I agree...it is the bloggers and artist who are ahead of the game. I tend to not follow trends and just do what I love or like at the time. I am a mixed combination of style...a little French, vintage, farmhouse, cottage and of course the pops of whimsy...I love it all!! This was a fun post!

    Hugs,
    Victoria

  6. my take: totally minimal....white...nostalgia....more Catholic art (but sparingly).....out with the apron, and in with the smock....out with the chippy paint...in with the industrial.....

I think of it as another 'dark ages' and when that happens, everyone turns to the light!

we'll talk about this at the sale :)
    check you email.....

  7. isn't it funny? i walked past a PB store at the mall the other day, and i thought, "i've seen that on at least 10 blogs- identical rooms with lower price tags."
makes me want to start over with something different in my home so people won't think i'm copying PB! but then again, i do vintage/rustic style because i like it- not because anyone else does. just so happens that a lot of people do! : )

  8. I absolutely agree with you, and have noticed the same thing over the years. I also agree that it is the sustainability / organic / grow your own movement that is taking off now.

  9. I noticed this and thought that it might be my imagination....but I have been receiving magazines on decor for 3 decades (yes, I'm old) and this is the most noticeable trend I have seen. I am not a trend setter myself, but have developed my own style simply by going with what I like...seems to work. thank you for your insight...smiles.

  10. Wow, what a brilliant and fun idea for a post. Good way to summarize our blog trends. :) I haven't been out blogging at all lately :( but this shows what I'm missing lol. Your blog too is always so full of peace and absolute beauty!

Also, I have a favor to ask...if you haven't already done so...
I'm trying to win a party contest and would love your help! Would you go here:

  11. I just started baking all of my family's bread. It is so rewarding! I totally can see a do-it-ourselves revolution :)

I don't think hobo's will ever replace my beloved garden gnomes, though ;)

  12. I agree about seeing so many of the ideas in great blogs before the style ever hits the 'chains'. I love farmhouse style, a bit rustic, but I'm needing more understanding of what makes 'modern farmhouse'. Can you share any bloggers that have this style in their homes to clarify for me? Thanks

  13. You know, every time I look through blogland and all the beautiful blogs I think to myself 'This is where Pottery Barn gets their inspiration and trends'... So I have to agree with you 100%. And to think somebody is getting paid to look at our blogs and start trends, just makes me giggle! Love you site!

    (thanks for the inclusion!)

  15. you are good. and so are all the bloganistas. can't wait to see if you are correct in your predictions.

  16. I second this! You are absolutely right! Bloganista's are the grass roots effort that is taking home decor and budget by storm! Great Post!!!:)

  17. I actually thought Pottery Barn might have been bugging my house before I ever blogged! LOL. I saw things in their catalogs that I had in my house first!

I do think they have gotten ideas from bloggers, but I also think they have some pretty creative people working for them; and just because an idea showed up on a blog before the catalog, does not necessarily mean that is where the idea originated. :) I see so very few truly original ideas out there, but lots of great interpretations of other's ideas or at least new uses.

Well, anyway, I think it was a great post. Just for the record, I am not digging out my son's Thomas the Tank Engine, but I have been buying more industrial stuff for the last couple of years.

Still hoping we can find some time to get together this spring! Do you ever go to estate sales? I could help you get some cheap left over after the sale furniture for some of your cool re-dos!
    :)Heidi

  18. Hi Lady...you hit the nail right on the head...in fact, the hubby and I were talking about this when I was going through my latest PB catalog...I was pointing out to him all the things that have been on blogs and are now in the catalog...like painted chalkboard platters, numbered pillows etc. etc. I agree that with you and ALVN at Whisperwood...I seriously doubt it is a coincidence.

  19. Don't forget to check out the BarnHouse Boys blog at http://www.barnhousebh.com for some inspiring takes on farmhouse and industrial country style. These two have had recent features in Somerset Life and the new Flea Market Style mags, and they are HUGE trendsetters in the Northwest - soon to be everywhere.

Our own business is based on utilizing recycled & reclaimed materials to design & create new furnishings & decor with vintage style - so I completely agree with you on several of your predictions!

  20. WONDERFUL post Jen!!! And thank you so much for including me....one great thing about nature-inspired artwork is that it will NEVER go out of style! 23. We moved to Florida to get away from the rain/snow/no sunshine of my 60 year old house in Indiana. We finally came back after a year long search for a home I preferred to my sixty year old home that I've lived in FOR SIXTY YEARS. arghhh

It is YOUR blog that has sent me on the road to improvements instead of constantly crying over the inconveniences of living the "same old" lifestyle.

I'm now in the process of making a very LONG shelf to fit over my old soap dish and toothbrush holder in the bathroom that was my waterloo.

But I can't find the exact post of yours to give me the encouragement I need to believe that, at 60 years of age, I can pull it off.

    Could you help?

  24. I absolutely agree (thank you for mentioning me)! I've long felt that PB is looking at blogs for ideas and magazines are too only they're so behind - we've all moved on to other things.

BTW wanted to tell you that I'm trying potato BAGS this year for my taters!

  25. thanks for including me, Jen! I'm flattered. And I agree, too! It seems like by the time ideas have hit "mainstream" media, all of us bloggers are practically over it! Or maybe still enjoying it, but it's nothing new to us. It just goes to show that all of us regular people have a lot more creativity and originality than we give ourselves credit for. It's refreshing to know that we don't have to depend on a magazine for all of our inspiration! (that being said we do LOVE to be published in a magazine...congrats, Jen!!)

  26. Hi, Jen, thanks so much for the mention. It is interesting to see all the trends that start on blogs & are all over the catalogs too. Not sure which came first, but I'm guilty of copying some things in Ballards many years ago.
