Leave it or paint it?

I found this little beauty at a thrift store.

It's the perfect size for next to my couch,

and the wood is actually in pretty good shape, but it feels just a tad heavy in the room; I was thinking a distressed vintagey green might be really nice.

So the question is, do I keep the wood or paint it?

  1. I don't think you can go wrong either way, but I think it would be super cute painted!! Especially a creamy white. Or even a color like pale turquoise!

It's such a beautiful and unique piece!

  2. That piece is really beautiful. I am definitely NOT a wood person,(you can see my most recent blog post about that very subject: http://toileinthefamily.blogspot.com/2010/04/no-respect.html
but I would have trouble painting that. I would like to see it in relation to the rest of the room to better decide.

  3. Oh God that is THE most beautiful end table I have ever seen!! But you know that you're going to paint it...

In my house, I just did the unthinkable: I painted my hard oak baseboards ivory. Then nearly threw up...

I panicked so bad that I took the WALL PAINT and put it on the baseboards just to hide the ivory.

Wall paint: according to time of day, is brown/mauve, then reddish brown - and it was called "MOCHA" on the chip.

It looks HORRID and I have no idea what to do next.

So, paint it dear. You are a dare-devil with paint!! Me...not so much.

  4. I love paint, but this piece is in such good shape the way it is. I vote to keep it as is for a while. If you still feel you want to paint it, you always can later on.

  7. I kinda like it the way it is! If it is too heavy for the room though, I would probably paint it. Either way, it's lovely.

  9. Hmmm...that's a hard one...but like some others have said...I think I'd live with it for a while...then decide....Oh the pressure ;o)

  10. Jen, everything you paint is amazing, but I think I'm gonna have to say keep this one as is. Only because it looks like it's in perfect condition and I love the color of the wood. It doesn't have that "old" look to it. It looks more rich to me.
    Keep it.

  12. This I would leave as is. However, I don't know how it really looks in the room and I am not you and don't actually have to live with it. Good luck with your choice.

  13. Oh this is a hard one. I love combining painted furniture with keeping it the way it is... is the rest of the room all dark wood .... if so then paint it. You make everything look fabulous. It'll be gorgeous either way.

  14. I would have a hard time painting that. It's gorgeous! I like a bit of dark in a light room though. My bedroom is creams and white with very dark brown furniture.

  15. That is very unique! I vote to paint it! I think it will look very cute!
I had to smile yesterday while I was browsing the "magazine" while lounging on my porch swing. To see your mugs, just made me grin!
    great job!

  16. What a great little piece! I'm with Molly -- I'd need to see it in relation to the rest of the room.

  19. Paint! Paint! Paint!!

And maybe back the inside with mellowed old bookpages?

LOVE it, though, no matter WHAT you end up doing with it!! ;)

  20. I know painted is really "in" right now. I am in the process of painting a desk myself, but this piece is so beautiful. Please leave it the way it is...at least for a little while.

  21. I think either way would fine. I think I'd check out a new drawer pull. I love funky hardware. I don't know what look you're going for though. Good find.

  22. It is beautiful the way it is, but I am never against painting wood! I think turquoise or cream would be beautiful! I have done little pops of colored pieces here and there throughout my home. It adds some whimsy! ;)

  23. I'd say don't paint it just b/c I think the finish is so pretty- but you might not want to listen to me. I have several tables around here that would probably look better painted but I just have this thing about painting over perfectly nice finishes. If it looked bad I would say go for it!

  24. i seem to be in the minority here, but i don't think i could paint a perfectly good wooden piece.....raw pine maybe.
I have an artist friend though, who does the most amazing ARTWORK on any surfaces....try check out her website jacquisimpson.com i think

  25. Mmm...it's really lovely, Jen. I have a mix of painted and stained furniture in my home. The pieces I painted are ones I found whilst treasure hunting...and I wouldn't dare touch the pieces that were handed down to me....hmmm...that table is REALLY lovely. I guess I'm with the crowd who suggests living with it for a while. Have you tried putting a row of matching light-colored old books in the bottom cubby...or a stack of sequentially sized boxes/trunks painted a light color. That might ease up the weight of it a bit.

  30. I'm a paintaholic, and I'll paint anything that stands still long enough, but honestly that is in really good shape. I say live with it for a while. Its a terrific piece, I'd love one like that.

  31. This piece is such a beauty as is and shows the richness of it's own - I like light but I couldn't paint it. Jennifer jennsthreegraces

  32. I'd normally say paint it but the wood is just beautiful on this piece. I'd leave it as is....you have it decorated so well too, it's perfect.

  33. Don't paint it! I'd have to see it in relation to the rest of the room, but I think it's close to a sin to paint wood that is in good condition. It's irreversible. Never to look the same again. If it's damaged I have no problem slapping a coat of paint on there. And it's easy to change from one color to the other, but that piece is beautiful the way it is. It really warms up the room.

  34. That's a tough one since it's in such good condition. Really, it's a beautiful piece with all those lovely lines. If you like it enough as it is, let it rest until a vision of something better inspires you completely. You'll have no regrets then.

  35. Hmm, a tough one. It is a beautiful piece. I too like some stained and some painted wood in our home. If it will work in the room with a bit of tweaking, I would say keep it wood. I like Julie M/The Little Red Shop's comment about playing with some accessories to visually lighten it a bit. Or maybe you have or could add a similar toned wood piece somewhere else in your room. Live with it a bit, and then you could always paint it.

  36. You know, usually I would say go ahead and paint, but that table is just so pretty. Something about the wood is very nice and rich looking. I say live with it for a while a see. There are times when you just have to get used to the new thing in the room.

  37. paint! paint! I used to have a business where I painted everything like this, in the beginnnings of the "shabby chic" era. Our motto used to be, everything looks better painted.:)

  38. I love it just the way it is! Now, I am looking for one a similar design for my living room!

  39. I would not paint it. The color is beautiful, at least in the photo. Live with it awhile.

WHY does everyone like painted over stained? If the wood is interesting, with a beautiful grain, covering it up . . . well, it would never be my choice.

Step away from the paint and live with it a bit. - - HollyM

  40. I paint pretty much everything, but I love that table. I think it looks fabulous just as it is, but if you're like me, it will drive you crazy until you paint it. Have fun with it.

  42. Oh, it's SO gorgeous!! Please don't paint it!! I'll adopt it...

  43. I think it is great as is... but would be absolutley gorgeous painted...

  44. I have a similar piece and would love to see a picture if you did end up painting it. It was my husband's grandmother's piece and I love it.
