Sure, she looks pretty...
But let me tell you, they are free loaders;
once they come to stay, they never leave.
And they bring friends. Lots of friends.
But, no chemicals in my yard!
So, meet my new crack "organic weed" squad.
I told them I'd pay them penny a flowerhead.
When they got to $2.00 each, we'd go for ice cream because they'd earned it,
...thinking that we'd get a few weeks out of it.
Those darn kids reached two bucks before the day was through.
It's going to be an expensive and fattening summer.
While they picked dandelions; we worked on our garden expansion to the raspberry and blueberry area.
It's almost there. The plum tree is in, and I added some bags of Moo-nure I bought.
I have to be honest, after years of changing diapers, I never thought I would ever be willing to pay for poo.

I have a cute 5 year old little girl who would come and "pick" your "flowers" for FREE! My daughter, Madison loves to pull weeds and blow on dandelions. Too bad we live in an apartment and don't have much of a yard :(
ReplyDeleteMy mother tried this same idea one summer. Only she was offering a penny per blossom to dead-head the rhododendrons. It got out of hand within the hour.
ReplyDeleteHubby and I worked in the yard this weekend too. I wish I had someone I could sucker...oh, I mean persuade to pull my weeds! Don't you just love the results you get with manure though?
ReplyDeleteI get pretty frustrated with dandelions as well. Last year I started looking for things to make with them. I made some dandelion cookies that weren't bad. My cousin told me his grandmother used to grow a special crop of them in her garden for salads. Not sure I want to go that far...
ReplyDeleteSooo sooo cute! I have to tell you, I love dandelions....they remind me of being young and making wishes.....and they are free flower...right?

Penny
There's lots of free horse poo at our place!
ReplyDeleteSooo very cute that they will work for pennies! My kids want to pick the dandelions after they flower...and blow the seeds into the yard. Yikes!
ReplyDeleteI am going to try this trick with sweetgum tree balls (kind of like acorns).

ReplyDeleteHilarious! Kids never cease to amaze me. What they won't do for a treat, or a little cash! And your comment about diapers and paying for poo caused a real giggle!
Have a great week.

My yard is full of those too. Maybe I should get my kids a bag and send them to work. Good idea!

Time to make dandelion wine! LOL!
ReplyDeleteThe dandelions seem really bad this year. Every time I go out I pick a few but they're impossible to get rid of unless you use chemicals.
Manuela
They pop up everywhere, but I still love the flowers because they remind me of being young. So, you pay $2 ....hmmmm I may volunteer. LOL
ReplyDeleteI'll come pick them for 2.00 or ice cream! Does that include sprinkles too? We have one corner of our yard that is just yellow with dandelions. I remember a Dandelion Wine that my grandmother made when I was younger out of the roots I think. I don't know. I may have to go and see if I can find a recipe for it.
ReplyDeleteThe bad thing is that you will never get rid of them. They are very hard to get rid of. I know up here in Cincy, they are everywhere! Good idea though with the kids. Too cute!
ReplyDeleteI love it! I told my husband about the idea and he's sold... the first non-rainy weekend, he's sending out our oldest for dandelion picking duty. She loves to pick them anyway so it shouldn't be too hard to persuade her.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to hear that you aren't using chemicals to rid your lawn of weeds! That is one of my pet peeves, the whole lawn industry....don't get me started! Dandelions are wonderful bee food...I look at everything differently since I've begun my bee adventures.
ReplyDeleteThat was MY job when I was growing up! Now it's STILL my job - I just don't get paid! How well I remember getting paid for every dandelion that had its roots still attached (that was the criteria). I THINK we actually used big old butcher knives, too! Didn't have the fancy dandelion diggers that I use now.
