The kitchen cabinet project is on hold until late September. Insurance is going to pay to replace the subfloor, one bank of cabinets right under the sink area and the flooring. How I am going to match our regular cabinets to match the new stuff is going to take a bit of paint magic for sure, but it's a blessing they are going to cover it and it has to be done. When I open the sink cabinets my eyes get just a bit itchy. I wish we could afford to do the whole kitchen at once and get all new cabinets, but alas, it's all about make do as usual around here.
The good thing is, I have about 10 other projects in the works including this rough caning
( which involves a bigger project), and now it's all about getting everything else ready for the mini-remodel.
We've never had to do anything major to the house before so the interviewing contractors and sourcing supplies is all new for us.
Any one have any advice for a remodeling a kitchen with kids?
I have a feeling it's going to be just a bit crazy.

Yes....picnics :) Its so much easier to get them out of the house and have fun with it. So make alot of packable foods and eat outside while the work is being done (besides, its beautiful out, right?!)
ReplyDeleteYou can even eat take out outside and play games. Think sandwiches, salads, hand-food (tortilla rollups), grocery store rotisserie chicken, take out pizza, chinese.....
Have fun and try not to stress too much :D
I've never gone through a remodel personally but I can imagine it would be a tad hectic with kids. I agree with what Lolo said above. It's a great idea. I hope everything works out and you have your kitchen back very soon.
ReplyDeleteMANY re-models here...lots of FUN, lots of Stress! :) Go have a picnic!
ReplyDeleteoh boy! Well, we've just remodeled our 2nd kitchen. No advice on contractors - we do it all ourselves.
ReplyDeleteGet lots of easy to fix food. Paper plates and plastic utensils.
I agree with the paper plates and plastics above me. I despise using disposables, but washing dishes in the same sink in which you brush your teeth is just gross. I was so spoiled with a garbage disposal that it took some getting used to to not scrape plates into the sink...in the bathroom! I set up a mini kitchen/dining room in the living room with necessities, but it is a whole lot of suck and will motivate you to get it done quicker. I only love remodels when they're done. Good luck to you. Can't wait to see it!
ReplyDeleteNo helpful hints from me - but I wish you good luck!
ReplyDeleteIt will cost twice as much, take twice and long and be the most miserable thing you've ever lived through. BUT, it will be way worth it!

I have been catching up on my reading of your past posts and love your clock faces and the bookends. I can only imagine how lovely your kitchen will be.
ReplyDeleteGood things are worth the wait.
Hmmm. Nope. Still would love to see it.
Patience is a virture??? :)
we did a major house reno about five years ago. it wasn't easy but we managed. they put my fridge in my dining room and i had a microwave and griddle that i used often. after it was done i thought it wasn't so bad but it was hard we didn't have a kitchen or family room for almost four months. they were nice enough to set up a utility sink and i could go in there and wash dishes at night when they were gone. that helped a lot. much luck friend, you'll be so happy you did it when it's done! i hope you find a great contractor! susan
ReplyDeleteI've done a huge remodel...take your time and DON"T get pressured or you'll have regrets! Do what you want and don't let anyone talk you out of it!
ReplyDeleteHave fun...I am sure everything will be beautiful!!
