Putting the pressure on...a bit of Etsy news...

With a nudge and some awesome support of my good friends Jeanne, Tracey and Anne Marie, I've decided to re-open my Etsy Store November 8th with the
 Found and Made collection.
It will have my up-cycled clothing, vintage items, and some of my art work such as this lady I've been working on for a while...Mary.

She's my take on a Santos or  Flemish Cage doll.  She stands just over 15 inches tall and
is completely hand-sculpted and hand-constructed.  I'll have a few of her friends as well. These are the kind of thing you either love or are creeped out by. My hubby liked it, one of my girlfriend's joked that the "eyes seem to follow her around the room." I laughed because my Grandma had a picture of the Pope  that used to do that.

So the deadline is on to finish up things, take photos and list everything in time for holiday shopping. There's nothing like a gentle prodding from goodfriend's to get your behind in gear. It's a good thing I work best under pressure. ;)

Get your halloween on....

My poor children; I'm such a bad Mommy this year. We've been so overwhelmed with the remodeling, I have to admit, Halloween has fallen to the side. There are no decorations up, we are carving our pumpkins tomorrow, this kids costumes are coming straight from the dress-up box and in my moments of stress and weakness I've eaten most of the Kit-Kat's and Twix bars meant for the trick-or-treaters, and those are definitely NOT organic, but ooooohhhhhh soooo gooooood.
And of course, I've had no Halloween posts...bad blogger!
But, if you are jonesing for  a few Halloween posts, here are some of mine from previous years,

There's my contribution to the pretty your pumpkin party

Have a Boo-tiful Halloween weekend! I hope it's not too chilling! :o

Construction answers and more...

You have some good questions; I hope I have some good answers.....  :)

Can we see a bigger picture of your wood countertops? Where did you get them from?  Were they expensive, are they hard to upkeep?

Here is the biggest picture I can give you without ruining the big finish. I bought them from Ikea and they are Oak. They were $169 USD for an 8 foot length and we needed about 13 feet. Because they are basically slabs you have to have someone fabricate them for you (i.e. cut the hole) and we also had the edges routered. It was still less than  $850 total for everything. Higher end laminate is just about the same, but with health risks and it's not environmentally friendly.
I just oil mine with Ikea's stuff. It's basically tung oil and food safe. So far so good, but I have to admit, they are so new I am afraid to use them. I'll let you know how it goes. I pity the poor fool that gets the first stain on them.

Did you face any hidden surprises?

The 4 foot by 4 foot  section of rotten flooring under the sink that smelled like mushroom compost was quite a surprise. It would certainly explain the tummy problems that I had been having that went away about 2 days after the floor was out. Plus the two layers of cheap linoleum that the previous owners had put down too. And the fact that behind some of the cabinets there was no dry wall, just studs. Oh and our washing machine that died three days after the contractor had finished. It's all one big, fabulous surprise.
One thing that was good is our contractor was SUPER organized and told us when to order everything. So we weren't waiting on cabinets or anything. It was ready to go when he was. It's better to have it sitting and waiting at your house than you waiting for the work to get done.
It's also a big surprise on how much work it is for the homeowner.  For instance, to save money we painted the trim ourselves. That meant we were doing it ASAP, 10 PM at night after a long day of dealing with the kids, working and regular life.

Did you face any hidden extras?

It wasn't so much extras because we are kind of "plan for the worst hope for the best" kind of people, the big stuff was fine, but it was the little stuff that wasn't budgeted for that killed us. It seemed we were always running to the store for more paint, more tarps, the floor needed extra plywood... and Oh,  since we are doing___let's upgrade to ____ for another $58. We called it the "while we are at it " trap, and it adds up fast. You have to draw the line somewhere.
We also ate out a lot and the kids bought a lot of hot lunches since our fridge was in the garage and the microwaves was in the basement.  All that extra eating out adds up when you are used to cooking. And I have to admit, I started not feeling well after  awhile from all of that gunky food.
If it weren't for the mold and water damage, I would've waited until the kids were older.

Is there any advice for anyone considering remodeling that you would give?

If you've never been through it, you can never be prepared enough, but make sure you have all of your ducks in a row and everything researched. You are going to have to do much more footwork than you think unless you hire a designer. I had 5 contractors give me quotes and believe me, they were all over the place. They ranged from $4,000 to $15,000 for pretty much the same thing. Never take the lowest bid, never take highest bid. And make sure that you can really talk to the person comfortably. If you have to see this person everyday for the next 3-4 weeks, you had better get along.
Prepare to TAPE and TARP everything off. There is dust in EVERYTHING, And it has a weird fine grit to it (It was one of the best pieces of advice a good neighbor gave us.).
Try not to get down. Sometimes it seems like it will never end. Never fear. it will end, and the day will come when you painfully have to write the last check. The last BIG check.
Prepare to live as if you were hobo's. We set up a kitchen in our laundry room and our coffee maker in the bathroom. The quote of the day came from my 8 year old. "Why do you make your coffee in the bathroom? You know, that's gross, I mean, people poop in there." 'nough said.
We are now waiting for the guys to come this week and service our furnace and clean our ducts out. I hope they come so I can finally turn our heat on.

How did you paint your cabinets?

I have to co out on that one and tell you that's a post for another day. :)

Are you going to use a runner on your stairs?
I am not sure yet; The money tree has been picked clean right now,but I think I might like to eventually. We do need to get slippers for the kids with the non-skid things on them. They aren't used to the slip of the wood and have wiped out a few times.

When are we going to see the big reveal?

I hate to say that it will still be a few more weeks and I hope you won't be disappointed. We still have our own punch-list and are trying to get everything unpacked. There is STUFF EVERYWHERE.
I told my girlfriend I feel like we are one step away from a A and E show, I am really afraid a pile will fall on me and kill me.

Where did you get your dress you wore at Nada?

Goodwill. $6.99. Never pay full price, but wash it well.

Where did you get the stamp of the ladies face for your tags?

I bought it years ago from Michael's, but I will tell you that it's made from Hampton art. It's  Diana Kovac's stamp and  the number is DF2139 small face frame. I hope that helps.

What kind of camera do you use?
A Nikon D5000. I love it.

Are you ever going to open your Etsy store again?
Yes.
I've been asked this quite a bit and am happy to say I have some new things and am also going to be putting in some thing's from Nada that I had made. I really need to end my lazy streak . :)

I hope I've answered all of your questions! If there is something else you'd like to know, feel free!

Refinished stairs and construction questions....

This is a more of a before and during, as thestairs aren't quite finished, but I know you want to see why my posting hasn't been as frequent.
As many of you know, we are in a spilt level. These are our six stairs to the second floor.
The previous owners had primed them, as well as the rest of the house's original wood (due to some supposedly wayward cats.). There was some hardwood in our first level, but not enough to go through the entire first floor, and very pet damaged,  so we had to replace it with the red oak. I really wish it would have been refinishable.

We were very lucky that there really wasn't any damage to the treads.

We still have to paint the risers and touch up the areas next tot the stairs, but they are looking so nice! I am so happy!
I feel like I've moved into a new house. Not because of the newness, but there is still so much unpacking to do! We did get a POD and that helped a lot for all of our stuff, but it goes after this week, so we really have to start moving things back to where they go.

I've had a lot of questions about our remodel with everything  from the countertops to the flooring and even how were contracted the job. Do you have a burning question you'd like answered? I have to admit this was our first big remodel experience so I really learned a lot. I'd like to plan on doing a post on it, so if you have anything, please ask away!

Waxed book pages...

What do you do with a paraffin foot bath and extra wax that you no longer use and and old dictionary??
For the Nada sale I waxed the pages for display to give them an old world kind of look. I think these could be cool and creepy for Halloween too.

I put it on low so I wouldn't burn myself and spread out some cardboard to rest the pages on to dry.
Then I dipped them slowly. After I pulled them out, I let the wax harden slightly then I laid them out to dry. By propping them on cardboard rolls and wadded paper you can shape them.
They turned out pretty cool for an experiment. I know paraffin is flammable so you have to make sure to keep them away from flame, but I just loved the glossy texture of them and am planning in using them for other crafts as well.
It had me thinking, what else can I wax? :)

Wood countertops are in!...

And I am ecstatic.
It's so funny because about the same time that this clever chick posted this; I had already been thinking the exact same thing! Great minds think alike.

We purchased our butcher block countertops from Ikea. They were so affordable and I loved that I could have something that there was no off-gassing with like laminate. Someday I would love Marble or a natural stone. Supposedly the laminate countertops off-gas VOC's for up to 7 years. We are lucky enough to live about five minutes from Ikea. Instead of the lighter colors though like Aspen or Maple, I went with the Oak though. I loved the warmth. My contractor routered the edge for me, but because I wanted a more aged appearance, I had him sand down the edges for a less pronounced look, like they had already been used for years and years. A few coats of food-safe sealer and they were ready to go. I know some people say the wood stains more, but we've never prepped food directly on our countertops with out a board; so for us it's not as issue.
We also bought a new sink. Our stainless sink was over 15 years old and showed every inch. I went with a white cast iron sink, as farmhouse sinks were just our of our budget range. I love the fact that the one we bought is from 93% recycled and reclaimed materials and was way under 200 dollars. Plus, it's deeper than our old one.

It is coming along; wait till you see our stairs. We were very lucky that there were Oak treads under the gross carpet. For once, we lucked out!  :)

Randomness....

I was going through some of my favorite photos that I've snapped here and there and thought I would share them with you... I don't know why they are my favorites, but something in them just catches my attention. I think I really like them because they make up for the 9,999 other crappy pictures I've taken.

Except this one. I can't take any credit for this one. My new favorite picture of myself was taken by Tracey of French Larkspur at the Nada sale. Since it's one of the only times I am in a dress and not covered with paint, I really like it. It makes me feel like a real farmgirl.

Sexy floors...You can have your on-site finished floor stains custom mixed.....

Our flooring is finally finished, I realized that it's really hard to get a good pictures of flooring color.

This picture above is the closest. I love this flooring. And I went against the grain (ha ha) and went with  a dark stain. It was actually a custom mix because the poor floor guy kept doing swatches and I kept going, Nope, not right, Nope. Nope. Finally we ended up with a blend of the darkest antique brown and red mahogany, so it ended up rich and dark with a warm undertone instead of ash undertones. Our floor guy was wonderfully patient and didn't eye roll too much.
Don't be afraid if a floor swatch isn't exactly the right color to ask. If you think it's needs more brown, have them add more brown. Make sure it's a color you absolutely love, you are going to be stuck with it for  a long time.
We also went with what's called rustic red oak "grade 2" (i.e. cheaper and more rustic. ). The funny thing is it just worked out that way, because when I picked it out in the flooring store, it was what my eye was immediately drawn to. I was elated when I found out it was a less expensive wood. The flooring guy said "wow, we don't see too much of this."... but I LOVE it. It has knots and worm holes and tree imperfections. It has so much character. It was only $2.69 a square foot. It looks old, it feels warm and alive.

We also went with finished on-site as opposed to pre-finished flooring. The way it was explained to me was that since pre-finished is basically a click and lock kind of  a thing, if someone spills then it could leak through the cracks. Finished on-site it more like a sheet of flooring where the poly can fill on some of those cracks. Since people  around here(i.e. my children) tend to spill orange juice and not tell me for 3 hours and we were also going to be putting it in the kitchen  I thought it was a much better idea. It did add about 4 days onto our job time and we had to be out of the house for a  few days, but so worth it. Also, we went with a low VOC product, but it still stunk. We had it finished in a satin finish so it wasn't too glossy.
The cabinets are going in today and I have to tell you girls... I think I am leaning away from painting the lower cabinets a color and am just going to go with white. Will you hate me? I am just afraid it will look too busy with a color even though I had my heart set on one. I started to do it on the swatch and I am just not feeling it.
I will also tell you about doing this whole thing (because I know a few of you are going to be remodeling soon). You have to look at the promise of the end result and not get bogged down in the daily chaos of living in complete destruction.
It's hard because there is stuff and dust everywhere; things are stacked where we have no place for them, and I am afraid they will find me trapped under a pile at some point. We are doing some of the work ourselves to save money and it is a lot of work daily. We have an awesomely, amazing, fast contractor, but things never go quick enough when you are washing dishes in a laundry room sink; and I love my children but realized I do not want to live with them in a 200 square foot area forever.
Oh, I am tired of crock pot food and Jimmy John's.
And, I need to stop complaining because when it is done it will be done and I can enjoy it.

Fall morning....

I sat outside early this morning; it started as a gorgeous indian summer day and I reflected on the whole weekend and the success of the Nada sale. I can feel a big sigh of relief that everything went so well .

I met so many nice people this weekend; fellow bloggers, residents of the area and people who had traveled from hundreds of miles away to come to our little sale. The barn looked beautiful, and the line that wrapped around the barn before we opened attested that other people were as excited as we were for our event. I have some amazing pictures to share and if you have a post about the sale, please let me know and on Monday I'll do a linky so you can share.

It was an amazing weekend, with happy moments, fun times and  a bit of sad news.

One of our blogger friends, Annie Grosvenor of Drawing a blank passed away this weekend after  a battle with cancer. I had met her  a few times and just remember the joyous attitude she had toward life. She truly had  a light of her own and will be remembered as someone with a wonderful spirit.

Life and all that comes with it is truly a blessing.

Thank you all who came out to our event and I hope to see you at the next one. The date is already scheduled for May 20th and 21st.
