Time to grow up...

Back when murals were waaaaaay cool, I did an "homage" to my husband's English roots by.. at 8 1/2 months pregnant BTW..  painting a castle mural on the soon-to -be-first baby's walls. It took me 13 hours. It's the room that started my mural business. My husband reminded me that I painted it the weekend he went for  a bachelor party in Vegas. Hm. Funny how he remembers that....
Anyhoo... back to the room.
I have to admit, It's a little bittersweet to see it go.

Can you see how old theses photo's are? I had to scan them from actual prints.

as each child came, I added a little bit more,
until by number 3 it was a full on paint-a-palooza.
and then when the crib went, the room became an office/storage place... Mostly filled with junk.
We affectionately called it the "hoarder's room"
Fittingly, the first "baby" is ready to grow up and get her own place; so she's headed back into the same room she started from.
So the "hawt" painter put on his bandana for me today and started painting.
He's such a good guy; I might have to give him  a big kiss. It's a good thing I'm married to him. :)

doggone favor....

It was time to get rid of the rug in the living room, and it was past cleaning.
Let's just say the dog helped us out.....
At first I was worried because I really don't have the cash right now to replace it with something I really liked.
But now that's its out, I actually really like it! It makes the room look open, a bit larger and actually is much cleaner.
Maybe the dog did us  a favor after all....

Strawberry weekend...

It's one of the last weekends here for the awesomeness of locally grown strawberries; so I am making freezer jam and strawberry syrup all weekend.
Freezer jam is super easy. There's a recipe right in the sure-jell box for quick and easy jam. It's as simple as mashing the fruit, adding the sugar and cooked pectin, putting it in the jars and freezing it. Yep, right in the glass  jars. No plastic, no real canning required! There is nothing like the flavor of fresh strawberries on your toast in the middle of December, or pouring yummy syrup on everything. And guess what, no fake red colorings or dyes and real strawberry flavor!
You can visit this post here if you are interested in the recipe for syrup from last year.

Chair before and after with Cabbage and Roses fabric...

Now that we are doing my daughter's big girl room (reveal soon!), I wanted to give you a sneak peek at the little chair we are going to be putting in her little "reading nook."
I love Cabbages and Roses fabric.  The next time we go visit my hubby's relative's I would love  to go into the actual Cabbages & Rose's store.

It's so beautiful and serene looking on-line.  When they asked  me if I wanted a few yards to redo the chair in I jumped on the chance! The pattern is bunty stripe. It's a beautiful variegated navy blue stripe on grey linen. *sigh* I love linen.
before
Remember the before pic? It was a cute, little chair, it just didn't go with anything in my house, least of all the idea I have brewing for my daughter's room.

I painted the wood white. I wasn't sure if I was going to at first, but then I knew that it would make the pattern pop.  I think it turned out so cute!
after
Whether to line up the stripes or not was my big dilemma... I decided that since I wasn't exactly an expert upholsterer; that I wouldn't worry about trying to make them match exactly. It looks so pretty it doesn't matter any way.

I edged it in  a lightly frayed grey woven trim.  I think it looks  a bit less formal than regular trim, and am so happy with how it turned out! I can't wait to finish the rest of the room to show you how the chair looks in it!

The best part is, I just found out that Cabbages & Roses is now going to be in the US!  They have collaborated with MODA Fabrics and produced their first range of quilting fabrics
(which I love quilting fabrics for every day decorating. My quilt shop knows me by first name).  This debut collection entitled the Northcote Range was exhibited at the ‘Quilt Market’ in Salt Lake City in May and will be available at your local fabric store this Fall. You can bet I am going to be in my quilt store twice as much now.

I'll keep you posted on the room progress!

The last bedroom...Inspiration photos

Thank you all for your comments yesterday. They really meant  a lot to me, and I took each one to heart. I think I am just in  a big let down after the rush-rush-rushing  of CL being here, then the Nada show, then Fifi all at once. Every bit of it was a welcomed blessing, but I also think it kind of leaves me in a space to fill with the"what next" syndrome. After reading all of your comments, I decided to just kind of go with the flow this summer, spend time with the kids, read a lot by the pool, and not pressure myself to produce amazing things on a schedule and see what unfolds.

Speaking of projects...
We've known it's been coming for a while now.. My oldest wants her own room. No longer will the 3 of them be "bunking up" dorm style.
So we are in the middle of working on that. It's one of the last rooms we really have to "do"... but I have  a feeling that after her room is done, the other two are going to want their own revamp. I'll have  a mini-sneak peek on  a piece of it this Thursday for you. These are some of the inspiration photo's I've been looking at from my old files, I am not sure where I got them from.

They are all kind of different as there are elements from each I  like. I have to admit she wants purple and pink stripes with Justin Bieber posters. I cannot just give her that freedom yet ; )

Stuck in the middle...

I have to be honest friends. If you can't tell, I've been in a bit of  a slump lately.
I am not sure what it is. I am just so, unmotivated.... and things seem to be moving slooooooowly. One of my friends mentioned that maybe I am having  a mid-life crisis.
I'm 39. Is that what it is? Because if it is, oh crap, I mean, 78 isn't that far off and I was kind of hoping for a few more years than that.
I was going to put up a bunch of happy decorating pictures today and I thought, what the heck, I should just let it all hang out with you, my blog buds.
Can you have a mid-life crisis at 39? Or should I really just put my big girl panties on and deal with it?

I guess I just feel like I am in a state of... waiting.  Waiting for what??? I am not really sure. Just, nothing is happening, I am not really sure what I am doing, and I really have absolutely no idea where I am going.  Just waiting....
So, any thoughts that sound saner than mine? Do I need more B-12? A kick in the butt?  Are you feeling the same way? Is it the state of the world or just my tiny corner?

I am all ears....

Tonight's dinner from the yarden...

Even though I don't share many recipes; I cook a lot. Almost every night in fact. And I am not a fancy cook at all. I like the basics. Most of the time, If I find a recipe that has more than 8 ingredients forget it.  Even though I do enjoy it; It gets tiring to cook every night, (and the dishes after) but it helps that my hubby also chips in a few nights a week. One thing that I find really keeps me from getting bored  is when we get into growing season and I can get outside and take things for our dinner right from our own yard. It adds something extra to the experience and saves us a good chunk of money over the summer and fall.

June can still be a bit on the thin side in the midwest, but we are managing to find  a few things.

Tonight was farm-raised scrambled eggs, salad and sauteed garlic-scapes and asparagus.
I adore garlic scapes! These are the top shoots of hard-neck garlic. They are totally edible until they straighten out, then they are too tough. You cut the little bulby part off at the top(and discard) and chop  up, cook and eat the green part. By removing them you not only give more energy back to the bulb, but have a tasty treat, like garlicky green beans ( you can cook them with green beans too.). I sautéed these in butter (then again, everything is good in butter) with the few spears of asparagus I had in my patch tonight.
Red Simpson lettuce. It's been so cool this year that the lettuce is still hanging on.

The only " ick" factor in homegrown lettuce is it has to be soaked and rinsed a few times, between the dirt and... other things. But it tastes so much better than store bought, and  did you know all supermarket greens are soaked in a mild bleach solution?

Our scrambled eggs are easily made with a bit of milk, salt and pepper and occasionally some chives. Our eggs from our local farmer's market (or my neighbor.). He's a local farmer who's chickens are all pastured and what grain they get are fed his own grown, organic, non-GMO mix. They have the loveliest golden-colored yolks... The same goes for  bleach with eggs in the supermarket too BTW.

I also made some homemade buttermilk dressing, recipe courtesy of The Pioneer Woman.  It was way easier than I thought. I hadn't planned on it, but I had to in a pinch because my 4 year old emptied the other bottle all over the kitchen table and her plate last night.

A Discovery of Witches book club review...

I am in Blogher's book club, and I recently read a Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness.

You can read my review here.

Whimsy and Ruby Begonia's...

When I went to the 3 French Hens Market on Saturday, we also walked around downtown Morris. It is only about 40 minutes from me, but I had never been out that way. I have to admit, living in the western suburbs of Chicago my whole life,  I never though of it as a great place to shop and hang out and had had no desire to go.  We'll I learn something new everyday! What  a great, little canal town! Quaint is the perfect word for it. It had a ton of character and there are a bunch of really cool shops. With the Market, you could definitely spend a day there shopping and looking. If I had more time, I wanted to drive around and take pictures of the houses. I might have to think about finding me a farm out that way to settle on after we retire. It had such a great, historic vibe. Around the downtown area all of the homes had that late 1800 early, 1900 feeling and architecture. That may have to be another trip for me and another post. :)
Two of my favorite stores are Ruby Begonia's and Whimsy.

I love Monica's store!  There is so much to look at!

and I adore her clothing!  There were a lot of thing's I drooled over.
Traci's store is a few steps down.

Her stuff was right up my alley. I just love Traci.

And everything was displayed in these awesome vignette's.
It's so worth the trip there.

Here are a list of all of the other shops in the downtown area if your are interested.

Food, fun and fancy things....

This weekend I went to the 3 French Hens French Country market on Morris, IL. What a great market! It had over 80 vendors with tons to look at, and the prices were super reasonable!

There was all kinds of vintage and handmade.

The view of the canal was gorgeous!

Ethan is 8 and painted this painting! I hate it when an 8 year old paints better than I do.

There was so much to see. I bought some great things plus a gorgeous orange-ruffled coneflower from one of the plant vendors.
We also walked around the cute shops in the downtown and I have those the share too.....More pics coming tomorrow!!!
