The Pinterest Dilemma....

Have you read all of the stuff going around about Pinterest? Well if you haven't read it( I have to admit, I didn't at first), basically, if you pin something without permission you can be sued by the original source, Pinterest is free and clear, and by pinning your images you are agreeing to let Pinterest sell anything you pin. That really scares me.
You can read it in further detail here at The Knoed
You can also read Kristin's post here about it

And Anne's here.
I have to be honest,  I don't want to give anyone blanket permission to my intellectual property. If Pinterest wants to be the hot new social media then they should take on the responsibility and not pass the buck.
So I am  deleting my boards. I am really sad because I LOVE pinterest. It's the best kind of virtual drug, but I just can't take that risk. It's a real shame. If they changed their policies to protect us instead of hurt us, I would go back in a heartbeat. As Anne said, I don't judge you if you still want to stay on, it's just a decision for myself.

Jen

Di gave me a little info on a chat with the owner and a blogger here, and they may be working on some changes. If they do, I will go back for sure. Anyone want to re-invite me? ;) Thanks Di!

  1. Pinterest is working on changes - you might want to read this blogger's post after the founder of Pinterest personally called her about her Pinterest post. (who says bloggers don't have pull?!) :)

  2. Hmmm. I wil refrain from Pinning until things have been cleared to my satisfaction.
Thank you for sharing this information...I'd heard rumblings but this is finite.

  3. Hi Jennifer,
I felt the same way you do, so I closed my account a few days ago. I don't want to be thrown into a huge legal battle over a pretty picture all by accident.
Hopefully they will change things in the future, it was such a great place for beautiful inspiration!~
    Hope you have great weekend.
    Sincerely,
    Melinda

  5. Thanks for the info! I decided to delete all my pins except the one from The Knoed, I unfollowed as well. Until things change it's not worth the risk.

  6. It is very scary,,,so I'm a new WATCHER not a pinner....I can still get all the inspiration I need simply by looking and not pinning...It's truly a shame I had some wonderful boards, just not worth the risk. I'll just bookmark the ones that I truly 'Love'

  7. Oh, this saddens me so very much! I enjoy Pinterest & have found so many great ideas. Your blog is inspiring. I understand your decision but I do hope that some solution is reached. Thank you for your inspiration!

  8. I read Kristin's post, but I don't totally understand it. And what if I delete my boards, what about my stuff that has been pinned? I like it as a way to save things I see that I'd love to do, try or for inspiration rather than just putting it in my Favorites. So, I'm not really sure what to do at this point. I guess there is no privacy setting or "hide your pins/boards" so that we can have our inspiration pics but not have them out there.

  9. This really saddens me. I love Pinterest and I don't quite understand how Pinterest can pass the buck like that. I think of my own photos that have been pinned and I know that if Pinterest tried to make a profit from them, I would go after them, not the pinner. I wonder if blaming the pinner, if they aren't making money from the pin, would actually hold up in court?
I hope this gets sorted out. So many people enjoy it.

  12. I've never joined, but it's too bad it has to come to this.
Hopefully no one would ever really sue someone for this.
I bet they will feel a tidal wave from this.

  13. I'm not ready to delete (that was hard to type...addicted? if I admit it, does that make it true? ha!) - I will keep this in consideration - I have faith they will have changes shortly...they just HAVE to! :) Thanks for this, you're right - it is important to know this! xoxo

  14. I am wondering if anyone knows why this isn't a problem with tumbler? Couldn't I open a tumbler account and save all my pins there? They wouldn't be organized on "boards" per se but I HATE the thought of losing all my favorite finds! JUst curious if anyone knows, I mean 1/2 my pins come from other people on Tumbler anyway so I am just curious why pictures can be there not on Pinterest?

  15. I also just deleted all my boards and my account. Yes, if they change their policy I will be back. For now it is what it is. It was sad to see my boards go, but right now there isn't any other choice.

  16. Dear Jen, I am sad you deleted your boards. i have been reading your blog for a few months now. Its my favorite! I just got my first computer for Christmas so I would only see it when I went to my Daughters house. I got on Pinterest right away. I too am scared to use it. Ive started teaching myself to pin my own personal pictures. I pinned alot of your pins so I will delete the ones that arent your personal ones. Keep your blog. I love it! Joni Debra Young

  19. I was just introduced to pinterest and had decided to join, I tried joining a few times and had no luck. I sent them my email address and I was supposed to get a confirmation back, did this a few time and nothing. I am thinking that there are more problems with Pinterest than just the ones that you all mentioned. which is too bad it was a good idea, hopefully they can work out the problems.
