See you there!!!

.
At Le Chocolat!!!!!!!
...If for some reason it gets crazy crowded while we are there, and the weather is nice(it's supposed to be 67 degrees by 11 am), we might take our treats and move to the park across the street (Washington) behind the YMCA and socialize picnic style! (If we move I'll make sure we let the staff know.).Afterwards, feel free to stop by Room 363 for a little shopping.

Getting that fall feeling from around the blogosphere.....

I have to admit it. Today it was in the 70's, but the leaves are just beginning to turn, and the air had that "Fall" smell. You know, the one with the mixture of fresh cut grass and loamy earth, with the dryness of crunchy leaves.

It's awesome.
I love this time of year when it's gorgeous out and you can go out and garden in a t-shirt and jeans and not die from the heat, but the nights cool off enough to be  a bit crisp and make you want to dive under the covers.
I was looking around a bit and found these inspirational Fall ideas, just in time to make me want to re do mine. I am  repainting in the living room this week, so it has to wait just  a little bit; but I can't wait to get the pumpkins and gourds and all kinds of Autumny things going!
Like this gorgeous decorating at Dear Lillie. I am secretly jealous. My house is never that clean that I could actually shoot from room to room and not have to kick a pair of underwear or some Barbie's out of the way.
Eclectically Vintage's fall mantel has me ready to rip everything off of mine and completely restyle it. I love the reflection of her light fixture in the mirror. So.So. Cool.
And I adore that touch of black and silver at The Old Painted Cottage. I also have that vintage pageant picture and I never would have though to use it that way!  I just love how it comes together.
Are you ready to decorate for fall? What are your favorite elements? How about an impromtu show us your fall decor linky party Next Tuesday?

The scent of Autumn....

When I was contacted by the Goose Creek Candle Company to try a candle and give one away to my readers; I jumped on it! I don't know about you, but I am a complete smell-a-phobe. I can't stand off smells ( i.e. I can smell mold  a mile away.), and even though I have a  dog, even she gets  a little stinky for me sometimes. My Oldest has the same"smell" thing. She's like  a bloodhound. I think one day she would make a million dollars working for some perfume company making up new scents.

They sent me Spice Gourmet jar candle. It smells like a cozy, yummy, Autumn. The first time I lit it, everyone came in and asked me if I was baking.

The two wicks have a pretty glow and it gets rid of those yucky cooking odors.
Goose Creek Candle Company has offered to give one of my lucky reader's a candle and offered a coupon code too!

To enter, visit Goose Creek Candle Company’s website, then come back here and leave a comment letting me know which candle/scent you would want if you win.

They are also offering an exclusive coupon code to my readers
The coupon code is 1050 and is for 25% off entire purchase and will expire September 30th.
I'll draw a winner Saturday morning.
For a second entry
you can “like” their FaceBook page .
Good luck!

*I have been compensated, but all opinions are entirely my own.....These candles smell darn good.*

Lets' go shopping!!!!

Both of my talents friends, Jeanne Oliver and Tracey Leber, have these amazing shops I just had to share with you.
Jeanne just released her new line of gorgeous bags, jewelry, art and vintage items.

I am so in love with Jeanne's bags. Her eye is amazing, and all of her art work and hand-made items are gorgeous.

Tracey and Jeanne just came back from France, and Tracey's shop is freshly stocked with all of her French vintage finds.

If  you haven't visited either Tracey or Jeanne's shop, I think it's worth a poke around just to see their amazing photography and styling.
And you never know what you might find while you're looking around either. :)

Using Paste wax vs. Polyacrylic sealers.....

I had a few questions about using paste wax vs. water-based polyacrylic sealers after my post yesterday, so I thought I would explain why a little bit and give you a chart with the pro's and cons of both. While I have been painting furniture for over a decade; I am not an expert by any means and while there are many other applications for both sealers, but I am talking specifically in relation to painted furniture.

I know paste wax is hot right now; but I still prefer using a glaze and polyacrylic "poly" (you can use the glaze technique I talked about in yesterday's post with chalk paint, In fact,on the chairs I showed you the blue was a flat paint and the grey was chalk paint.) and my biggest reason is at the very end.
Here are some pros and cons of both:
-Paste wax is  a beautiful product and gives a lovely finish. However, in high use areas it can scratch, and easily wears. It is really meant to enhance the finish, not protect the wood. I know if I put it on a table top with my kids, the  little monsters would put a fork mark right across the top two seconds after I was done. Polyacrylic is really the stuff you need to keep a table top or chair from scratching and hold up to everyday wear and tear.
(That being said, I have used paste wax over  a painted"polyed" surface because I know it makes marker and other stains easily removable.)
-Poly needs to be reapplied every few years, where in a high use area, you have to reapply wax every few months. In a piece that is not high use, not as much.
-Paste wax will deepen colors and really enrich them like poly can't. Though Poly will intensify them. Brown paste wax can add a nice patina if you don't want to go through the trouble of waiting for a glaze to dry. However, brown antiquing wax generally comes in one shade where glaze can come in any shade.
- I do think that wax allows wood to breath better. Whether that makes a difference in painted furniture as opposed to stained or natural wood, I don't know.
-Polyacrylic dries in a few hours where wax can take over a day to cure. In a very warm room or really sunny window it might not cure at all and brown wax can actually rub off and stain  fabric textiles.
-Even though chalk paint itself can be environmentally  friendly and lower VOC, as are many flat paints, Wax and Poly are both generally not, both have solvents (even though Polyacrylic is a water-based product), and need to be applied in really well ventilated areas.
-Both poly and paste wax  can be applied over chalk or flat paint.
-Poly can be applied in a brush or spray application where wax only has one application method. Though wax will always give you a beautiful, smooth, deep finish, and really enhance color or grain,water-based poly can be streaky and temperamental to put on with a brush (I prefer the spray).
-The one point that alters my decision the most  is when you go to repaint a piece of furniture. With wax, you have to remove every last bit, or your paint will come right off. This can involve extensive sanding or stripping, where with Poly, you can give it a light sand to give it some tooth and paint away. Since I am a frequent furniture re-painter, this would be way too time consuming for me. You can also use poly to seal a  piece against "bleed through" such as when you are trying to paint over that finicky red mahogany.
Here's also a quick chart to help you make a decision which one you might want to use.

I hope this helps you make a decision which sealer is the best one for your painted project.

Cutie-patootie chairs.....

I thought these chairs had such a cute shape, but they  really needed a little paint pick-me up.
When I started blogging all I did was paint furniture. I love painting furniture. The last year with working I haven't had as much time, but I have really missed it. So, I've decided  to  try to get a few pieces a month into my little booth.
I did one with dark grey and light blue, and then I reversed the other chair and painted that one light blue with dark grey.
I actually use brown paint to age them; a technique I am going to to be talking about and showing you how to do in the Creatively Made Home e-course. It's a super easy way to age furniture and easy to do.
I've been painting furniture for almost 14 years now and I actually prefer to not use paste wax, especially brown paste wax for many reasons. I know it's hot right now; but I just think there are more disadvantages to advantages. I know you chalk paint lovers will hate me for that, but it's just a personal preference. :)
I finish most of my pieces with a polyacrylic in matte or satin.
It's a super-durable finish and holds up well with  kids.
That, and a bit of sanding and acrylic paint just give it that extra bit of patina to take these old chairs from just old to worn and lovely.

Make a belted storage utility basket.....

I've been in love lately with the look of utility storage baskets that have the buckles in front.Even more, I love having  a place to jam all of my "stuff" into that makes the clutter look a little bit neater.  I did price some out on-line and "yikes!"
I knew there had to be a better way to replicate the look with out spending so much. Walking though the thrift store the other day I had an a-ha! moment and made one of these:
I picked up a cheap basket at the store and a few belts from the thrift store.
After cutting off the little doo-hickey beads in front, I put my belts across the top to see which one looked the best.
I went with the darkest because I liked the color and pattern the best,
I measured it across the top, letting the top part of the buckle hang over where I wanted it to end up and trimmed it where it met the back of the basket. I hot glued it on. Now make sure you clean up your glue gun strings people, because you know the Craft Wars judges hate those. ;)
I then fastened the belt together and measured it from the bottom.
Then I also trimmed and hot glued. I had no problem cutting the leather with a sharp pair of scissors.
And there it was! My belted basket!

It looks so cute and ready to hide all of my junk!
